Virtual music therapy

How we keep kids engaged on screen

If you're wondering whether your child will connect with a therapist through a screen, you're asking an important question. Virtual music therapy is live and interactive — not a video your child watches on their own. The music therapist responds to your child, using their interests and individualized goals to shape the session.

At Peyton Music Therapy, Arizona families connect with board-certified music therapists for individualized, 100% virtual sessions. The screen connects your child with their therapist; the activities can invite participation through movement, sound, play, and choices.

Engagement doesn't have to mean sitting still

Music therapy can include much more than watching and listening. The activities already featured in our sessions include:

  • Movement

Rhythm that invites the whole body to join in.

  • Instrument play

Exploring drums, shakers, keys, and the sounds that hold your child's attention.

  • Musical games

Stop-and-go, follow-along, matching, and playful challenges built around their goals.

  • Prop play

Using scarves, ribbons, stretchy bands, and other props for hands-on participation.

  • Sensory music play

Combining movement, textures, visuals, and sound.

  • Musical choice-making

Opportunities to communicate preferences, make choices, and build independence.

These are examples, not a checklist every child has to complete. Your therapist chooses the approach for your child rather than expecting every child to participate in the same way.

Their interests are a starting point — not a distraction

What draws your child in matters. A preferred song, an instrument they want to explore, or an opportunity to choose what comes next can become part of a purposeful activity.

The goal isn't simply to keep your child entertained. Your therapist connects musical activities with individualized goals, which may include communication, emotional regulation, attention, motor skills, social connection, or independence. These are areas of support, not promised outcomes.

Your observations matter, too

You know your child in ways a therapist is still getting to know them. Tell your therapist what interests your child, what tends to be difficult, and what participation looks like at home. The caregiver consultation offers time to discuss your child's experience and support outside of sessions.

Music therapy sessions last 40 minutes, with a 20 minutes caregiver consultation available. Before you begin, discuss how much caregiver participation your child may need and what setup would be helpful for your family.

What if online sessions aren't a good fit?

Virtual music therapy isn't right for every child. We don't promise that a particular activity will hold your child's attention or that online sessions will work for every family.

Your therapist gets to know your child during sessions and completes an individual assessment after the first month of sessions. That assessment helps establish a baseline and informs individualized goals. Your therapist reviews progress with your family and adjusts the approach as needed.

Music therapy supports the care your child already receives; it does not replace medical care or other therapies, and it does not treat or cure a diagnosis.
